Digital Storytelling Educational Technology Unit Openers Video in the Classroom

Download Youtube Videos

Many districts understandably block Youtube in schools. For this reason you may want to download videos for classroom use. You can do this from http://www.zamzar.com.

If you need help doing this. Click on this screen capture from Zamzar where I’ve highlighted what you need to do:

Zamzar - Free online file conversion

Why would you want to do this?

The short film format is perfect for providing an effective unit opener. For example, search for dinosaurs and find some terrific footage that could be used to introduce the fossils unit.

  1. The directions to use zamzar aren’t clear to a neophyte techie. Could you please make them clearer? I am a third grade teacher wishing to use videos for curriculum.

Click on the image in the post which shows step by step what to do. If you get stuck on a particular step then please let me know and I’ll help from there.

  3. You could also use videokeeper.net to download the videos directly from Youtube.
Pro: It can also download from other sites + also has a bookmarklet. Works for Youtube, Myspace vids, google vids and more!

Contra: It doesn’t evade firewalls/proxies though so when Youtube is banned, you can’t use the site either (handy for @ home though!)

  4. Re: showing YouTube videos in the classroom:

I’m still not sure I’ve got this…I want to be able to show YouTube Videos in my classroom: is there a way to download the videos right there in my classroom, and save them for showing, or do I have to take the computer home to do it?

Thanks for all your help, and your website!

Yes, both zamzar and pwnyoutube allow you download youtube movies to your computer and you do not need to take a computer home (though you will need transport the movie on a flash drive from home to school if that’s where you are downloading the movies).

  6. Download Youtube videos online at http://facebookvid.com, you can also select formats of video like 3GP (Mobile Format), MP4 (High Quality Video) and FLV (Normal Flash Video). Its free and you can download unlimited videos.

  7. Does this actually work? I usually dig thru my temp files when I am using IE, but with FireFox it ain’t that easy to dig them up.

  8. I’m trying to use zamzar to download a schooltube video on tornadoes; I’ve put in the URL – I get a message that there is no file extension…can’t find the answer in ZAMZAR help. Any ideas? Thanks!

    1. This post is about downloading movies from youtube. I have not tried downloading movies from schooltube. You might try using the downloadhelper pluging for firefox which seems to work on my computer. I’m working on a post that will explain better how to do that.
