Frequently Asked Questions:

Where is the Word Knowledge?
Word knowledge is located on the SRA web site. This is not the SRA web site but I do provide a link to their word knowledge page. Here is the word knowledge or choose your grade level and a unit and scroll down to click on “Word Knowledge

Where are the wonderful powerpoints you used to have?
They’re still there. Choose your grade level and unit and then click on the word “Powerpoints.”

Where are the 5th Grade Study Guides? I used them last year in 4th grade, I can’t believe you removed them!
The 4th grade study guides are accessible still by clicking on the word “Study Guides” on any 4th grade unit page. The 5th grade study guides have not been moved; they never existed! They will be added to the 5th grade pages under “Study Guides” as soon as someone (maybe you?) creates and submits them.

What New Look?
Pages are being redesigned to improve user experience, make the site easier to navigate, and improve aesthetics.

Why the change?
Originally I tried to make the unit pages easy to navigate by putting all resources on one page. However, as the amount of resources has increased, it has become increasingly difficult to navigate such a long page (particularly in a school setting where monitors tend to be smaller). I teach 2nd grade myself so I’m acutely aware of this.

The new design increases the amount of clicking but decreases the amount of scrolling required to find resources. I believe the result is a cleaner, less intimidating looking page. Based on feedback received, most people find the new look to be an improvement.

I have also redesigned the general resources page and will do the same to other unit pages in the future.

Where are the resources?
Rest assured that all the resources that were there before are still there (and if they’re not it’s a mistake, please let me know).

In addition to the advantage of less scrolling, I’ve also cross-referenced files where possible so it may be easier to find new resources.

I welcome your comments and questions on this post.

  1. I like the new format. It’s much easier to navigate! Continued thanks for all the work you put into this great resource for us troops in the trenches!

  2. I took a quick look at the “new” layout and I feel it looks much “cleaner”. I am one who does not mind scrolling thru to find what I am looking for, but the newer layout looks more user friendly.

I also wanted to let you know, I am a first-year user of OC and have found your site very beneficial. Thank you so much for putting this together and keeping it current. It has been a wonderful resource!

  3. So far I think I like it. I’ve not looked at it as close as I plan to yet. But, there is something that I would like to see that neither layouts have. That is “Reader’s Theatre”, using vocabulary words in a play layout. Third grade has it and I love it.

  4. Is there any way that we could make necessary changes to the template? We can no longer make necessary changes to the Weekly homework sheet. Stories and spelling words do not always match the Open Court Materials we are using. We love the website and use all the time.

  5. The homework sheets are now provided in pdf format rather than word to ensure consistency in printing and maximize compatibility.

I would be glad to provide you with word templates you can use to adapt. However, I would ask that you please forward your changes to me so that I can add the different editions to the site.

  6. Where are the fifth grade study guides? I used to use them last year when my son was in fourth grade but ever since you changed the layout I can’t find them!

  7. Resources are added to the page whenever a teacher submits them. The fourth grade study guides are where they always were but THERE ARE NO 5TH GRADE STUDY GUIDES. Sorry. As soon as a teacher submits them, they’ll be added to the page.

  8. I love the new look. It has helped a lot. One question, this year the only story summary and vocabulary is from Menlo Park school. There used to be another site where we could get it but i no longer cna find it–Please help!
The summary for Teammates is inaccurate.
    Thanks
    3rd grade

  9. Rashida,

Please understand that Open Court Resources has many links to external sites as well as original material. I have no control over the external sites you mention.

  10. Dear Mathew,

Could you please tell me if the vocabulary worksheets that used to be found in the homework sheets for Grade 2 still exist. I saw the new formatted sheets but prefer the other because that is what I started the year with and the children are used to.

  11. The homework sheets have not changed or been removed. Select either the homework page or the vocabulary page for additional vocabulary activities.

  12. I love the site and the new format is great. Thank you so much. The only question I have is in the 2nd grade, Look Again unit, I can find the 2000 & 2005 homework sheets, but not the 2002. I noticed you offered the template to another teacher. I will gladly create the 2002 if you send me the format. I was going to do it for myself and staff, but it would be so much easier with the template. I will of course send it to you. as soon as I finish

  13. I just want you to know how thankful I am to have found your website. I transferred from 3rd to 4th last year and had to relearn OC after many years of knowing it WELL in 3rd grade. Your resources really helped me make my first 4th grade year go smoothly!! Many Thanks!! :))
