  1. For several years, I’ve given my kindergarten students the opportunity to watch/listen to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and the reactions have been amazing. No usual fidgeting or whispering- rapt attention for the ENTIRE speech. Quotes from my last group: “Teacher, I like that man. His voice is big and strong but he’s not mean.” “Mrs. S., he is very smart. He says I can go to school with my friends.”

  2. It’s certainly much more powerful whenever possible to show students the actual speech than just tell them about it. I’ve stared keeping ML King, Ceser Chavez, FDR audio/video on my iPod for easy access when it comes time for whatever unit or for those teachable moments.

  3. Hi!

Great resources! One thing I always enjoyed what having I Have a Dream played while the class imagines being there. Everything is so silent except Dr. King’s booming voice. Gives you chills, he is such a good speaker!

One more resource could be to make an online book. Here’s one I made:

    Hope you find it useful!
