Open Court Reading Writing

Daily Journal Idea

Submitted by Guy Swentek…

Students write every day in a single-subject spiral notebook that they will take home every night for review and return every day.

Some “typical” writings/lessons for the week:

  • Monday – spelling words/sentences
  • Tuesday – phonics & fluency
  • Wednesday – word knowledge
  • Thursday – vocabulary & context meaning
  • Friday – writing lesson
  • The notebook will provide more opportunities for parental involvement and improve student learning.

Each student receives a new notebook every trimester. Inside the front cover the instructions for the notebook’s use are pasted:

    Daily Language Arts Notebook

    · Every day student will write words and/or sentences that reinforce today’s lessons.

    · Every night student will read aloud their writing to parent at least three times.

    · Parent will discuss and review the content of the lessons with their child.

    · Parent will sign the page and include a comment to the teacher.

    · This notebook is to be brought to school every morning and home every afternoon along with the “time tracker” and homework.

At the end of each trimester, student will take the notebook home to keep for further review and study at home.
